Worked example with the starting values
- Goal $300 a month, RPM 3, 4 videos a month.
- $300 ÷ 3 × 1,000 = 100,000 views a month.
- 100,000 ÷ 4 videos = 25,000 views per video, about 3,334 views a day.
- Same goal with a Shorts RPM of 0.1: 3,000,000 views a month, 30 times as many.
RPM and views FAQ
What is RPM on YouTube?
RPM means revenue per mille: what you earn per 1,000 views after the platform's share. Find it in YouTube Studio under Analytics → Revenue.
What is the difference between RPM and CPM?
CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what reaches you per 1,000 views, so it is always lower.
How many views do I need for $1,000 a month?
With an RPM of 3 it is about 333,000 views a month, or roughly 83,000 per video at 4 videos.
Why is RPM so low on Shorts and TikTok?
Short-form revenue pools are spread across huge numbers of views. Many creators earn more there through brand deals than ad share.
